A mestizo Saint Bernard and a collie were given to the experimenter scientist’s house. Eileen was loved and cherished by everyone in the house. The dog reciprocated. The owner, Mrs. Gray, liked to put her feet on the animal, the older girl played with Eileen. She made a habit of lying next to the cradle of the baby, the owners’ young son.

One day a spark from the hearth hit the canopy of the cradle. Eileen pulled the infant out and rushed to the exit. She was met by her master, who began to beat her with a cane and mangled her paw. Only the babysitter’s cry of «Fire in the nursery!» explained the man’s act to the dog. Eileen began to be groomed even more.

Soon she had a puppy. The owner and the girl admired her baby. But in the summer they went away somewhere. Colleagues came to the owner’s house, having intelligent conversations.

One day the owner took the puppy and did something to him. The dog squealed shrilly, its head was covered in blood.The man said that the experiment confirmed his theory.

But the puppy died. The servant buried it in the garden. Eileen sat by the grave. The servants tried to persuade her, but she would not leave. And she died.
